Delays Ahead
Gig Review by Dawn / Photo (York 2004) by Dawn
Tonight is a testing time
for Delays. Not only is this one of the largest
venues they've played thus far, but the continuing chatter as they
take to the stage suggests that the majority of the Tuesday evening
Teesside crowd are going to be rather more difficult to charm than
previous audiences on this tour with Ocean Colour Scene have been.
It's testament to the Southampton quartet's professionalism,
then, that those of us who do give them our full attention are rewarded
with one of their slickest, most impressive shows to date and that,
by the time the boys close their set with forthcoming single Long
Time Coming, their bewitching performance has also succeeded
in winning over several new fans.
The opening strains of the irresistible Wanderlust
drift from the stage and when diminutive frontman Greg Gilbert opens
his mouth, his angelic yet powerful voice immediately fills the
vast Town Hall and no doubt makes more than a handful of people
suddenly sit up and take notice.

The band's intoxicating tunes and perfect harmonies are
never demonstrated better than in stunning new song On; as Greg
alternates between spinning around the stage and adding his distinctive
vocals to those of Colin and Aaron, the music weaves and builds to a crescendo
like some sort of enchanting fairground organ, but a million times more
melodic.
It's almost enough to make you forget that there are still
a few people chattering around you, but not quite - until the lads launch
into debut single Nearer Than Heaven with a passion and an enthusiasm
so evident and contagious that even the obviously inebriated gentleman
beside me can be heard yelling to his companions, 'I liked that one!'
Some of us, however, are more than content to leave the
alcohol for later; Delays' spellbinding melodies and hypnotic performance
are quite intoxicating enough on their own.
A million thanks to the lovely
Delays boys and to Mike. Visit www.theDelays.co.uk
