Athlete | CD review | 2003

ATHLETE - Vehicles and Animals

Review by Di

A lot has been whispered of this band in recent months, but somehow they've not really risen above a slight murmur; this is an album which should change all of that. Following the release of the singles Westside, You've Got The Style and Beautiful, this is as diverse, quirky and unusual as you might expect, as each song is crafted with a unique magic that's quite intoxicating. Drifting from the dreamily understated melodies of One Million, New Project and the wonderful title track Vehicles and Animals to the strong, glimmering grandeur of Le Casio, the album spins a delicate and intriguing tale that's constantly full of spectacular surprises. The unusual scope of styles and the bizarre twists that often mark the tracks could easily be baffling, but they're all held together here as Athlete exude a charm so endearing that you'll fall in love with them without realising.
